3-Day Itinerary for Traveling in Malta
Day 1: Explore the Capital and Surroundings
Valletta

Morning: Start your day by exploring Valletta, the capital city. Visit St John’s Co-Cathedral, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, and the nearby Museum of Fine Arts. Don’t forget to check out the stunning dome painted by Caravaggio!

Lunch: Have lunch at one of the many restaurants in Republic Street or Merchants Street, offering a variety of Maltese and international cuisine.

Afternoon: Take a stroll around the city walls for panoramic views of Valletta’s beautiful harbor. Visit Fort St Elmo, which houses the National War Museum.

- Tarxien Temples: A short bus ride away, these megalithic temples are older than the Pyramids and Stonehenge.
- Blue Grotto: Just a 10-minute taxi ride from Tarxien, this natural wonder is a series of sea caverns with stunning blue water. Boat tours are available.

Day 2: Historical Sites and Hidden Gems
Mdina
- Morning: Head to the ancient city of Mdina. Walk its silent streets, visit the stunning St Paul’s Cathedral, and explore the Palazzo Falson Historic Museum.
Rabat and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum
- Afternoon: Take a short walk or taxi ride to Rabat. Visit the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world.
Dingli Cliffs and Blue Lagoon
- Evening: Drive west to Dingli Cliffs for breathtaking views over the Mediterranean. If time allows, head to the nearby Golden Bay Beach or Għajnsielem Bay for a relaxing sunset.
Day 3: Gozo Island
Ferry from Cirkewwa
- Morning: Take an early morning ferry from Cirkewwa to Gozo Island. Visit the ancient Ggantija Temples, older than the Pyramids!
Victoria, the Citadel and Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary
- Afternoon: Head to Victoria, the island’s main town, and explore the beautiful Citadel with its museums and shops. Visit the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary, a place of pilgrimage for many Maltese.
Other Attractions in Gozo
- Dwejra: See the Azure Window (now collapsed), the Inland Sea, and Fungus Rock. Boat tours are available.
- Ramla Bay: Enjoy a relaxing afternoon at this beautiful red sand beach.
Things to Know
- The ferry from Malta to Gozo operates between 6:30 am and 10:00 pm.
- Gozo is less developed than Malta, so rental cars are highly recommended.
- There’s a small fee for entering the Ggantija Temples, but it’s worth it!
