Mali 7-Day Travel Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Bamako

  • Arrive at the Sévaré International Airport (SEW) in Bamako.
  • Check into your hotel and rest after your flight.
  • Visit the National Museum of Mali to learn about the country’s history, culture, and art.
  • Explore the city center, including the Grand Marché, a bustling market selling local goods.

Day 2: Bamako Sightseeing & Relaxation

  • Visit the Niger River, where you can take a boat tour to observe local life and wildlife.
  • Explore the Artisan Village of Kalabancou for unique Malian handicrafts.
  • Relax at the Stromatolites, natural limestone formations along the Niger River banks.
  • Enjoy traditional Malian cuisine at a local restaurant.

Day 3: Segou (Transportation: Car or Bus)

  • Travel to Segou (approximately 4 hours by car or bus).
  • Visit the ancient city of Djenné, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and explore its impressive mosque.
  • Discover the Segou Bird Sanctuary and enjoy birdwatching.

Day 4: Dogon Country (Transportation: Car or 4x4)

  • Travel to Dogon Country (approximately 6 hours by car or 4x4).
  • Explore the cliffside villages of Bandiagara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Visit the local market in Sangha and interact with the Dogon people.

Day 5: Dogon Country & Mopti (Transportation: Car or 4x4)

  • Continue exploring Dogon Country, visiting sites such as Tongomayo Caves, Nombori Kora, and Yelepa.
  • Travel to Mopti (approximately 3 hours by car or 4x4).
  • Observe the daily life of the Inland Delta fishermen at the confluence of the Niger and Bani Rivers.

Day 6: Djenné & Return to Bamako (Transportation: Car or Bus)

  • Return to Segou, then travel back to Djenné (approximately 4 hours by car or bus).
  • Spend time relaxing in this beautiful town and exploring any sights you may have missed on Day 3.
  • Travel back to Bamako (approximately 5 hours by car or bus) for an evening meal and rest.

Day 7: Departure from Bamako

  • Depending on your flight schedule, take time for last-minute shopping or sightseeing in Bamako.
  • Transfer to Sévaré International Airport for your departure.

Things to Know:

  1. Mali is a primarily Muslim country, and it’s essential to respect local customs and traditions.
  2. The official language is French, but many people also speak Bambara or other regional languages.
  3. Mali experiences a tropical savanna climate, with high temperatures year-round. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing and insect repellent.
  4. Visa requirements for Mali depend on your nationality; check the latest information from your country’s embassy or consulate in Mali.
  5. Malian currency is the CFA franc (XOF). Credit cards are accepted in major cities but not always outside of them, so have cash on hand.
