Lucerne 7 Day Itinerary (The Full Loop)

Seven days is the full Lucerne loop: our 6-day itinerary (Old Town, Rigi, Pilatus, Titlis, the museums, Interlaken) plus a genuinely different fourth mountain, the Stanserhorn’s open-top cable car, as a calmer finish rather than a fifth big peak crammed in early.
Book these before you go:
- A Swiss Travel Pass, it covers Rigi free and 50% off Pilatus and Titlis, the two priciest days here.
- Check the Titlis Rotair schedule: closed 17 August to 11 December 2026, with the Titlis Connect cable car substituting (verify before you travel).
- Nothing for the Luzern-Interlaken Express or the Stanserhorn; both sell tickets same-day.

Day 1: the Old Town core
Chapel Bridge and the Water Tower first, free, best before the mid-morning crowds; the bridge is a faithful reconstruction after a 1993 fire destroyed roughly two-thirds of it and 86 of its original paintings. The Lion Monument, free, and the Glacier Garden next door (around CHF 24 adult, verify), then the free Musegg Wall towers in the afternoon, roughly April-November (verify current season).
Tip for Day 1: finish with a lakefront walk near the KKL, free, and the easiest way to see the mountains lit at dusk.
Day 2: Mt Rigi
Cogwheel train from Vitznau (Europe’s first mountain railway, 1871) to Rigi Kulm at roughly 1,798 metres, free with a Swiss Travel Pass or around CHF 78 without one.
Tip for Day 2: check the Rigi webcam that morning, mountain weather above Lucerne can shift faster than a city forecast keeps up with.
Day 3: Mt Pilatus, the Golden Round Trip
The world’s steepest cogwheel railway, from Alpnachstad, combined with a boat and an aerial cableway via Kriens, around CHF 119.50 per adult, only 50% off with the pass. Seasonal, roughly May to November.
Tip for Day 3: buy the combined Golden Round Trip ticket rather than separate legs.
Day 4: Mt Titlis via Engelberg
About 50 minutes by train to Engelberg, then a free shuttle. The Rotair is closed 17 August to 11 December 2026, with the Titlis Connect cable car substituting (verify before you go). At the roughly 3,020-metre summit: the Cliff Walk suspension bridge and a year-round glacier park. Around CHF 96, 50% off with the pass.
Tip for Day 4: confirm which cable car is actually running before you leave that morning.
Day 5: museums and a lake cruise
Morning at the Swiss Museum of Transport, around CHF 37 adult, a genuine three-to-four-hour visit. Afternoon at the Rosengart Collection, 47 Picasso works and 120 by Paul Klee; check current admission before you go. Close with a shorter SGV lake cruise.
Tip for Day 5: skip the planetarium add-on if you’re tired from four mountain days already, the main halls fill the time you have on their own.
Day 6: Interlaken
The Luzern-Interlaken Express, a scenic line over the Brünig Pass, takes under 2 hours each way and needs no advance reservation. A genuine full day once the return leg is counted, not a mountain-day add-on.
Tip for Day 6: buy the ticket same-day, the line runs hourly with nothing to book ahead.
Day 7: Stanserhorn and a relaxed finish
The historic funicular from Stans to Kälti, then the CabriO, the world’s first open-top double-decker cable car, up to roughly 1,900 metres, with views claimed over 100km of Alps and 10 Swiss lakes, plus the revolving Rondorama restaurant at the summit. It’s seasonal, roughly mid-April to mid-November, and a return ticket runs around CHF 90+. It’s a gentler close than the other three mountains, worth exactly that on a final day. Spend the rest of the afternoon on anything you didn’t get to earlier, a last walk through the Old Town squares or a stop you skipped, before your onward journey.
Tip for Day 7: if the weather looks marginal, swap this for a free final morning on the Musegg Wall instead, Stanserhorn’s view is worth saving for a clear day rather than a rushed one.
