- Jabal Qauqous (Mitiga Mountain): For panoramic views of the city, take a trip to Mitiga Mountain.
Things to Know:
- Libya is generally safe for tourists, but it’s always good to exercise caution and avoid political demonstrations or sensitive areas.
- Dress modestly, respecting local customs and traditions.
- English is not widely spoken, so it may be helpful to learn some basic Arabic phrases or have a translation app handy.
- The official currency is the Libyan Dinar (LYD). Credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger shops but cash is king elsewhere.
Visa Requirements:
- Citizens from most countries require a visa to enter Libya. Check with your local Libyan embassy for the latest requirements.
- Travel insurance is mandatory, and your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date.
Transportation:
- Taxis are widely available in Tripoli and are a convenient way to get around the city. Bargain for the price before starting your journey.
- A car rental service is also an option, but keep in mind that road conditions can be challenging, and driving in Libya can be stressful for some visitors.
Day 2: Journey to Leptis Magna & Surfing at Wadi Al Shati
Activities:
- Leptis Magna: Drive about 120 km east of Tripoli to visit this ancient Roman city, one of Libya’s most important archaeological sites. Don’t miss the Theatre, Basilica, and Severan Arch.
- Wadi Al Shati: Head back to the coast and spend the afternoon at Wadi Al Shati, a surfing paradise with consistent swells perfect for both beginners and experienced surfers. Rent a board and lessons are available if needed.
Things to Know:
- The best time for surfing in Wadi Al Shati is from September to May when the waves are most substantial.
- Remember to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses as protection against the strong Libyan sun.
- For those not interested in surfing, there’s also an opportunity to relax on the beach or explore nearby fishing villages.
- It’s recommended to hire a local guide for a more enriching experience at Leptis Magna and for safer transportation.
