Lhasa, Tibet: 5-Day Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrival & Acclimatization
- Arrive at Lhasa Gonggar Airport or Lhasa Railway Station.
- Check-in at your hotel (recommended: Hotel Shambhala or Hotel Tibet) and rest for acclimatization.
- Visit the Barkhor Street in the evening, a traditional pilgrimage route where you can shop for souvenirs and enjoy local street food.
Day 2 - Temple Exploration
- Start your day with breakfast at the Lhasa Kitchen or Yak Restaurant.
- Visit the Potala Palace, the winter palace of the Dalai Lama. (Note: Closed on Mondays.)
- Head to the Jokhang Temple and the surrounding Barkhor Kora, a sacred circuit walked by pilgrims.
- In the evening, explore the Norbulingka Park, summer palace of the Dalai Lama.
Day 3 - Monastery & Sightseeing
- After breakfast, visit the Sera Monastery in the morning to witness the Monk Debate (around 9am).
- Head to the Drepung Monastery in the afternoon, another important seat of Tibetan Buddhism.
- Spend your evening relaxing and exploring the local neighborhoods like Bahi or Gongkar.
Day 4 - Natural Beauty & Folklore
- Post breakfast, take a day trip to visit the Lake Yamdrok (Yamdok Yumtso) and Palace of Panchen Lama in Tsedang.
- On your way back, stop by the Carpet Factory in Gyantse for some beautiful Tibetan handmade carpets.
Day 5 - Leisure & Departure
- Spend your last day at leisure, shopping or exploring local areas you might have missed.
- Enjoy a farewell meal at a traditional Tibetan restaurant like Lhasa Restaurant or Tibet Kitchen.
- Prepare for your departure from Lhasa Gonggar Airport or Lhasa Railway Station.
Things to Know:
- Altitude sickness is common in Lhasa, so take precautions and acclimatize properly.
- Carry enough cash as credit cards are not widely accepted.
- Respect the local customs and traditions, especially during religious ceremonies.
Transportation:
- Taxis and private cars are available for sightseeing.
