4-Day Itinerary for Exploring Lalibela, Ethiopia
Day 1: Arrival and Acclimatization
Activities:
- Arrive at Lalibela Airport (Bishoftu) or Debre Markos and transfer to your hotel for check-in and rest.
- Visit the nearby Monastery of Yemrehana Kristos, a 13th-century rock-hewn church located approximately 30 km from Lalibela town. It’s open on Sundays and Ethiopian holidays.

Things to Know:

- The main attractions are the 11 rock-hewn churches, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These churches can be visited from Day 2 onwards.
- The best time to visit Lalibela is during the dry season (October to February) when the weather is mild and sunny.
Day 2: Exploring the Rock-Hewn Churches (Lower Area)
Activities:
- Visit the Lower Area churches, which include Beta Maryam, Beta Amanual, Beta Meskel, Beta Danaghel, Beta Mikael, Beta Golgotha MIKEL and Wostafana Meklehayilot (Tomb of King Lalibela).
- Enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants in Lalibela town. Recommended: Meskele Restaurant or Tukul Village.
Transportation: You can walk to the churches as they are within close proximity to each other. Alternatively, hire a taxi or a local guide for an immersive experience.
Day 3: Exploring the Rock-Hewn Churches (Upper Area) and Surroundings
Activities:
- Visit the Upper Area churches, which include Beta Gabriel-Rufael, Beta Merkoreios, Beta Amanalemenu’el, Beta Abba Libanos, Beta Geberriel-Mikael, Beta Teklehaimanot and Beta Kidus Raguel.
- Take a day trip to the nearby Church of Asheton Maryam (approximately 3 km from Lalibela town). This church is not part of the 11 rock-hewn churches but offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Day 4: Last Minute Sightseeing and Departure
Activities:
- Visit any churches that you may have missed during your stay in Lalibela.
- Purchase souvenirs from local shops or marketplaces.
- Transfer to the airport for your departure. If time allows, stop by a coffee ceremony shop to sample Ethiopian coffee before leaving.
Tips:
- Dress modestly when visiting churches, covering shoulders and knees is recommended.
- Carry cash (Ethiopian Birr) as many places do not accept credit cards.
- Stay hydrated and apply sunscreen during the day.
- Respect local customs and traditions during your visit.
- Consider hiring a guide for an enriching experience and to learn more about Lalibela’s history and culture.
