Kyrgyzstan 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Trap)

Seven days takes the 6-day north loop , Bishkek, Issyk-Kul, Karakol and Song-Kol, and adds a genuine second leg: Osh, in the south, joined by a roughly 1 hour flight rather than the 10-12 hour drive over high passes. It’s not enough time to add Osh by road on top of the north loop, that’s why the flight matters. For a shorter version without the south, see the 5 or 6-day plans. Most US, UK, EU, Canadian, Australian and Japanese passports get 30 days visa-free, not 60, everyone else needs an e-visa . Carry som (KGS), around 87-90 to the dollar, there’s no ATM at all at Song-Kol. Mid-range, seven days runs around $70-120 a day; yurt camps are closer to $25-80 per person including meals.

Book these before you go

  • Your e-visa, if you’re not on the 30-day visa-free list.

Day 1: Bishkek

Land at Manas (BSZ since August 2025, formerly FRU) and spend the day in central Bishkek: Ala-Too Square, Osh Bazaar, the White House and National Philharmonic. Day 2: Bishkek to Issyk-Kul

Head to Issyk-Kul’s north shore, about 280km and roughly 5 hours, with Burana Tower, an hour east, a natural stop: an 11th century minaret over the ruins of Balasagun, part of the 2014 UNESCO Silk Roads listing, not a standalone site. Issyk-Kul is the world’s second-largest alpine lake by volume after Titicaca and never freezes, from its depth and geothermal springs rather than salt alone. Cholpon-Ata is the resort strip, petroglyphs and Soviet-legacy sanatorium hotels like Aurora, Karven and Raduga.

Day 3: Karakol and Jeti-Oguz

Continue to Karakol: the Dungan Mosque, built in 1907-10 without a single nail, and the wooden Holy Trinity Cathedral. In the afternoon, Jeti-Ögüz’s red sandstone cliffs, including the Broken Heart rock, forty to sixty minutes southwest. Karakol’s hotel options, the Green Yard Hotel and CBT-network guesthouses, are worth booking a night or two ahead in peak summer.

Day 4: Altyn-Arashan

A day trip from Karakol to Altyn-Arashan, a hot-springs valley reached on foot, horse or by 4x4. The full Ala-Kul Lake trek, a separate 3-day, 50-55km undertaking to a glacial lake at roughly 3,532m over a 3,860m pass, is the more serious alternative if you have the days and legs for it, but doesn’t fit alongside Song-Kol and Osh in one week, treat it as a reason to come back rather than something to force into this trip.

Day 5: Karakol to Song-Kol

Backtrack toward Kochkor, then the rutted, 4x4-only track up to Song-Kol, a high alpine lake at 3,016m ringed by summer jailoo pastures, accessible only from around mid-June to September. Arrange the yurt stay and horse trek via Viator or through CBT Kochkor directly. Kymyz, fermented mare’s milk, gets passed around the evening meal, and nights are properly cold even in July.

Day 6: Song-Kol to Bishkek

A full day’s drive back to Bishkek, whichever route you take. This is a transit day, not a sightseeing one, and it needs treating as such, don’t schedule anything else against it.

Day 7: fly to Osh

Fly Bishkek to Osh, about an hour rather than the 10-12 hour drive. Sulaiman-Too, a sacred mountain with petroglyphs, caves and a museum built into the rock, is Kyrgyzstan’s only standalone UNESCO World Heritage Site , inscribed in 2009, and worth the whole afternoon. The huge Jayma Bazaar relocated out of the city center in 2025, confirm the current site before you go looking for it downtown. Osh hotels on Booking.com include the Sunrise Osh Hotel and the Classic Hotel, both with views toward Sulaiman-Too. One day here is a taste, not a full visit, Arslanbob’s walnut forest, reputedly the world’s largest, and the Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve further west, a Biosphere Reserve rather than a UNESCO World Heritage Site, both deserve an eighth day if you can spare it. Fly back to Bishkek that evening for an onward connection, or overnight in Osh if your flight home routes through OSS instead.

One regional note that this route doesn’t cross: the US State Department flags the Batken and Leilek districts on the southwest Tajikistan border, leftover unexploded ordnance off the marked tracks from 2022 clashes, though a March 2025 border treaty has held since. Seven days is enough for the north loop plus a real, if brief, look at the south, don’t try to also drive between them, the flight is what makes this itinerary work at all.
