Kyoto Japan 3 Day Itinerary
Three days adds a third gateway to the same spine: Nara and Uji on day one, Osaka on day two, then Himeji Castle paired with Kobe on day three rather than a dedicated round trip that doesn’t justify its own train fare. Day 1: Nara and Uji on the same line
JR’s Nara Line Miyakoji Rapid runs Kyoto Station to JR Nara Station in about 45 minutes for ¥720, or take Kintetsu’s Limited Express in roughly 35 minutes for about ¥1,280 with the surcharge. Use Kintetsu-Nara Station over JR Nara Station if you go that route; it’s a 5 minute walk to the deer park against 18-20 minutes from JR’s side. Todai-ji’s Great Buddha Hall runs ¥800 for ages 13 and up, ¥400 for 6-12, correcting the ¥600 figure still floating around in older guides. Deer crackers cost about ¥200 a pack, and the deer will nip anyone holding food without offering it, so keep snacks out of sight until you’re ready. Arrive by 8-9am to beat the tour buses.
By early afternoon, push on to Uji, about 20-22 minutes further along the same line for roughly ¥240. Byodo-in’s general admission is ¥700 for the garden and Hoshokan museum; the Phoenix Hall interior tacks on ¥300 for a timed slot that sells out by midday, gate-only, no advance reservation. Can you really fit Nara and Uji into one day?
Yes, comfortably, because they sit on the same JR Nara Line rather than requiring a separate trip back through Kyoto Station. Budget 3-4 hours for Nara’s deer park and Todai-ji, then 2-3 hours for Uji’s temple and a tea break. The only real constraint is timing Uji’s Phoenix Hall interior slot before it sells out, so don’t linger too long over Nara’s souvenir shops.
Day 2: Osaka, a full day’s worth
JR’s Special Rapid reaches Osaka Station or Umeda in about 28-30 minutes for ¥580. Osaka Castle in the morning, Dotonbori’s neon canal front for takoyaki and okonomiyaki through the afternoon, and the Umeda Sky Building’s observation deck if daylight allows. Day 3: Himeji Castle, paired with Kobe
The Shinkansen covers Kyoto to Himeji in about 55 minutes for roughly ¥4,740; JR’s Special Rapid takes 90-95 minutes for about ¥2,210 with no surcharge. Since March 1, 2026, non-resident admission is ¥2,500 for anyone 18 or over, up from the old ¥1,000 rate, though under-18s enter free regardless of residency and groups of 30-plus non-residents pay ¥2,000 each. Add the Koko-en Garden combined ticket for ¥2,600. Gate hours run 9:00-17:00, last entry 16:00, and the official ticket portal opens bookings 90 days ahead.
Should Himeji be its own dedicated day trip from Kyoto?
No. At roughly ¥4,740 each way by Shinkansen, a solo Kyoto-Himeji round trip burns close to ¥9,500 in train fare alone before the ¥2,500 entrance fee. Himeji sits on the same Shinkansen corridor as Kobe, about 25 minutes further down the line, so the better math is folding both into one day rather than paying for two separate round trips on two separate days.
From Himeji, continue to Kobe, about 30 minutes back up the same Shinkansen line toward Kyoto for roughly ¥2,870. A Kobe beef dinner at a teppanyaki counter closes out the day properly; the Kitano Ijinkan district and Nunobiki Herb Garden ropeway are worth adding if the castle visit ran short. Head back to Kyoto Station on the Shinkansen for the night; the whole Himeji-Kobe day, done this way, costs less and covers more ground than a Himeji-only round trip ever would.
