Kunming 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Two days in Kunming is enough for the honest version: one day in the city core, one day at a real UNESCO site, nothing manufactured in between. Book these before you go
- A VPN, installed and tested before you land, you cannot reach a provider’s site once you’re inside China’s firewall
- Alipay or WeChat Pay, linked to a foreign card via passport registration, set up before you arrive
- Some cash as backup for Stone Forest-area stalls, alongside your cashless wallet
Day 1: Green Lake and Yuantong Temple
Start at Green Lake Park (Cuihu), free and walk-in, no booking needed. If you’re visiting between November and March, this is also where you’ll see the black-headed gulls that winter here, a genuine seasonal spectacle rather than a year-round feature. From the park it’s a short walk to Yuantong Temple, Kunming’s largest and oldest working Buddhist temple, dating to the 8th-9th centuries and notable for combining three different Buddhist traditions on one site. Spend the afternoon setting up Alipay or WeChat Pay if you haven’t already, and confirm your VPN is actually working before you need it. Rough cost for the day: a modest temple entry fee plus food, most of it comes down to what you eat rather than tickets.
Day 2: Stone Forest, the actual UNESCO site
Stone Forest (Shilin) is directly part of the “South China Karst” UNESCO World Heritage listing, inscribed in 2007, a vast limestone pillar landscape roughly 90km southeast of the city and home to the Sani (a Yi subgroup) people’s Ashima legend. Take the bullet train from Kunming South to Shilin West (about ¥18, roughly 20 minutes), then local Bus 99 for the last stretch, or a direct coach from Kunming East Bus Station (roughly ¥34, about 1.5 hours) if you’d rather skip the transfer. Go early, the scenic area fills with tour groups by mid-morning; budget a real few hours once you’re inside rather than rushing through. Carry some cash alongside your cashless wallet, small stalls near the entrance aren’t always set up for a foreign-linked card.

Is 2 days actually enough for Kunming?
It’s enough to see the city’s genuine highlights and one real UNESCO site without rushing either. What you don’t get is any of the wider Yunnan province, Dali and Lijiang are each their own overnight legs by rail, not something to squeeze into a 2-day Kunming trip.
One thing worth doing before day 1 even starts: link Alipay or WeChat Pay to a foreign card via passport registration before you arrive, near-cashless is the default here, and a little backup cash on top of it covers the gaps, not instead of it.
