7-Day Itinerary for Exploring North Korea
Day 1: Arrival in Pyongyang
- Arrival at Pyongyang Sunan International Airport (visa required: Tourist visas are required for most nationalities. You must apply through a DPRK tour operator and cannot enter independently.)
- Transfer to Hotel Ryugyong or Koryo Hotel (official Pyongyang hotels where foreigners usually stay)
- Lunch at local restaurant (Expect traditional Korean cuisine with a unique North Korean twist)
- Afternoon visit to Kim Il-sung Square and the Grand People’s Study House
- Dinner and rest (Evenings are typically quiet in Pyongyang, but there might be performances at the local circus or Arirang Mass Games depending on the season)
Day 2: Exploring Pyongyang
- Breakfast at hotel
- Morning visit to the Arch of Triumph and Mansu Hill Grand Monument
- Lunch at local restaurant
- Afternoon tour of the Korean War Museum, USS Pueblo and Juche Tower
- Dinner and rest (Evenings can include a performance at the P’yongyang Art Troupe or Taedonggang Street nightlife)
Day 3: Day trip to Kaesong and the DMZ
- Early breakfast, departure for Kaesong City
- Visit Koryo Museum, Konstantin Uhle House, and local bazaar (Kaesong is a historical city with a rich cultural heritage)
- Lunch at the Chollima Restaurant in Kaesong
- Afternoon visit to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and Panmunjom (A guided tour of this tense border area can be both fascinating and sobering)
- Return to Pyongyang for dinner and rest
Day 4: Nampo City and Chollima Steamship
- Breakfast at hotel, departure for Nampo City
- Visit Chongnyon Street and Ryongmun Cave (Nampo is a picturesque city on the Taedong River)
- Lunch aboard the Chollima Steamship (Cruise through scenic Taedong River)
- Afternoon return to Pyongyang, dinner and rest
Day 5: Visit Mount Myohyang
- Breakfast at hotel, departure for Mount Myohyang
- Visit the International Friendship Exhibition Centre and Pohyon Temple (Mount Myohyang is famous for its beautiful mountains and temples)
- Lunch at local restaurant
- Afternoon hike to Ryongjesu Pavilion, return to Pyongyang for dinner and rest
Day 6: Hamhung City and Wonsan
- Breakfast at hotel, departure for Hamhung City
- Visit the Hamhung Grand Theatre, Ch’ilsong Tower and Chongjin Square (Hamhung is the economic center of North Korea)
- Lunch en route to Wonsan
- Afternoon explore Wonsan City Beach and Songdowon International Schoolchildren’s Camp
- Dinner in Wonsan, return to Pyongyang for rest
Day 7: Departure from Pyongyang
- Breakfast at hotel
- Free time until departure (You might want to buy souvenirs or explore more of Pyongyang)
