Seven days based in Kolkata is the version of this itinerary we would actually pick. Days 1-5 are unchanged from the 5-day itinerary ; days 6 and 7 replace the 6-day itinerary ’s rushed single-day Sundarbans trip with a genuine overnight, one night at a forest lodge instead of a dark-to-dark bus errand. It is still shorter than the standard 2-night package, but it is a different trip from the single-day version, not just a longer one.
Book these before you go: a Park Street or New Market hotel on Agoda or Booking.com , a 1-night Sundarbans safari or the equivalent tour on GetYourGuide , both of which bundle the forest-entry permit, and your Murshidabad and Shantiniketan train tickets a few days ahead in peak season.

Day 1: Dakshineswar and Belur Math
Combine free entry Dakshineswar Kali Temple with Belur Math, headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, into one half-day by Metro plus a short taxi hop, direct taxi, or the river ferry, per current timings on West Bengal Tourism . Base yourself around Park Street; every other day on this trip runs out of Howrah.
Day 2: Chandannagar
A Howrah-line local train, per the current Indian Railways timetable , covers the 35-44km to Chandannagar in 40-55 minutes. Walk the French-era Strand along the Hooghly, see the Sacred Heart Church, eat lunch by the river, and take an afternoon train back.
Day 3: Shantiniketan

What should I book furthest in advance on this 7-day trip?
The Sundarbans lodge and boat, since capacity is limited by lodge room count and boat licenses rather than a simple ticket queue. Book it a week or two ahead outside peak season, and well before that during Durga Puja week (mid-to-late October), when hotel and transport demand across the whole state spikes at once.
Pack a change of clothes you do not mind getting muddy for the Sundarbans leg. Boat jetties there are working docks, not tourist piers, and the transfer between road transport and boat is rarely a clean, dry step.
