Two-Day Itinerary for Exploring Kiribati
Day 1: Tarawa Atoll
Morning:
- Arrival at Bonriki International Airport (BIRK) in South Tarawa, the administrative center of Kiribati.
- Check-in at your hotel or guesthouse. Recommended: Tangareea Palace Hotel or Manaava Housing & Guest House.
- Freshen up and have breakfast at your accommodation or nearby cafes like the Kabua Cafe or Santa Fe Cafe.
Afternoon:
- Visit the National Library & Museum of Kiribati to learn about the history and culture of the island nation. (Open Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM)
- Explore the Nanikuli Market for fresh seafood, local produce, and handicrafts.
- Take a stroll along Bairiki Causeway, a wooden walkway connecting South Tarawa’s islands.
- Visit the Tabonjuaken Church & Cultural Centre to witness the beautiful blend of traditional Kiribati culture with Christian influences.
Evening:
- Have dinner at local restaurants like Te Mwengabweni or Aboriba Restaurant.
- Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Betio Beach as you watch the sunset.
Day 2: Outer Islands (Tabiteuea North)
Morning:
- Early breakfast and transfer to Tarawa Atoll Airport for a short flight to Tabiteuea North, one of Kiribati’s outer islands. (Flights are limited, so plan ahead.)
- Visit the Cooperative Society Store on the island to purchase local copra, handicrafts, and fresh produce.
Afternoon:
- Explore the beautiful Tabiteuea North Lagoon via kayak or traditional outrigger canoe. Keep your eyes peeled for the island’s diverse marine life.
- Visit the Tarawa Taberengaeae Church, a historic landmark in Kiribati.
- Learn about coconut processing at a local coconut oil production facility.
Evening:
- Prepare for your return to South Tarawa in the evening.
- Have dinner and rest at your accommodation in South Tarawa before departing the following day.
