Hamburg 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Seven days is our 6-day itinerary , city core plus Lübeck plus Bremen or Lüneburg, with a third day trip added. This is genuinely the point where day trips, not a longer city stay, are doing the work: Hamburg itself stays a tight 2-3 days, and days 5 through 7 range further out. Book these before you go
- Miniatur Wunderland timed slot : sells out its timed slots regularly.
- Elbphilharmonie Plaza ticket : pricing is mid-transition, a €5 booking fee moving to a flat €5 entry from 5 October 2026.
- Check hotel rates in Hamburg : a full week is long enough that a slightly quieter base, HafenCity or Altona, pays off over the loud St. Pauli option.
Day 1: Rathaus, Alster and Speicherstadt
Morning: The Rathaus, then the Binnenalster promenade.
Afternoon: The Speicherstadt, free to wander, Hamburg’s one UNESCO World Heritage Site (a single 2015 inscription with the Kontorhaus district and Chilehaus), then the Elbphilharmonie Plaza, about €5, pricing is mid-transition, check the current fee.
Evening: A Fischbrötchen at Landungsbrücken, then a first look at St. Pauli.
Day 2: Miniatur Wunderland and the harbor
Morning: Miniatur Wunderland, around €22, book a timed slot ahead.
Afternoon: HADAG ferry line 62 (Landungsbrücken-Finkenwerder) on a normal HVV ticket, no surcharge, or a harbor tour for €12.50-30. Sunday means the Fischmarkt, 5-9:30am, since 1703.
Evening: St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn properly, a real live-music district and genuine red-light scene at once; Herbertstraße is one barricaded street within it, not the whole strip. Decline any “better bar” tout and agree drink prices up front wherever you go, it’s a known routine here. Beatles-Platz, free, marks the band’s five Hamburg residencies, 1960-62.
Day 3: A museum and the Alster’s far shore
Morning: The International Maritime Museum (€18) or the Kunsthalle (€18, closed Mondays). St. Michael’s Church tower (~€8) if there’s time.
Afternoon: Walk or cycle the Außenalster, the larger of the two lakes.
Evening: Sternschanze for dinner and bars.
Day 4: Blankenese and Övelgönne
Morning: The S1/S11 to Blankenese; the Treppenviertel is around 5,000 steps threading between cottages on the riverbank, wear proper shoes.
Afternoon: Walk the Elbe shore to Övelgönne, past the captains’ houses, to the sandy walking beach and the Strandperle bar; not swimmable, the currents and shipping traffic rule that out.
Evening: Dinner back in the city, HafenCity or St. Georg’s Lange Reihe.
Day 5: Day trip to Lübeck
Lübeck is about 40-50 minutes by train, the standout day trip: the Holstentor gate, and Niederegger’s flagship marzipan shop near the market square. Back in Hamburg by evening.
Day 6: Day trip to Bremen or Lüneburg
Option A, Bremen (45 min-1h): a UNESCO-listed Rathaus, the Roland statue, the Town Musicians statue, and the Schnoor quarter.
Option B, Lüneburg (36-40 min): a compact, fully walkable medieval salt town, the lower-key of the two.
Day 7: Day trip to Stade/Altes Land or Cuxhaven/Wadden Sea
Option A, Stade and the Altes Land (~1h): a half-timbered town beside Europe’s largest orchard region; the blossom, late April to early May, is the actual reason to time a visit here, outside that window it’s a quieter, still pleasant half-timbered-town day.
Option B, Cuxhaven and the Wadden Sea (~2h): UNESCO-listed tidal flats you can walk out onto at low tide, a less-touristed choice than the other options this week.
Save Sylt (3h+) and Berlin (2h27, and it deserves its own multi-day trip) for a separate visit rather than folding either into this week.
Is 7 days enough for Hamburg?
Seven days covers the full city core plus three honest day trips, genuinely the point of diminishing returns for staying inside Hamburg itself versus ranging out. It’s not a week spent stretching the city, it’s 2-3 days in the city and the rest spent well beyond it, which is the honest way to spend a week here.
