Ghana 6-Day Travel Itinerary (Markdown Format)
Day 1: Arrival & Accra City Tour
- Arrive at Kotoka International Airport (Accra).
- Visa Requirements: For many nationalities, a visa is required to enter Ghana. Check the Ghana Immigration Service website for more details or consult your local Ghana embassy.
- Pick up your rental car (recommended for flexibility) or hire a taxi. Uber is also available in Accra.
- Visit the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and the nearby Independence Square, symbolizing Ghana’s independence from British rule.
- Explore Labadi Beach, one of Accra’s most popular beaches.
- Overnight at a hotel in Accra (e.g., Labadi Beach Hotel or La Villa Boutique Hotel).
Day 2: Jamestown & James Fort
- In the morning, head to Jamestown and visit James Fort, an old Dutch colonial settlement built in the 17th century.
- Take a tour of the Ussher Fort, another historical site with a dark past as a slave holding fort.
- After lunch, enjoy the panoramic views from the top of the Lighthouse and learn about its history.
- Overnight at your hotel in Accra.
Day 3: Cape Coast & Elmina
- Drive to Cape Coast (approximately 2 hours) and visit the Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a tragic past as a slave trade center.
- Learn about Ghana’s history at the Kakum National Park, home to numerous wildlife species and a canopy walkway.
- Continue to Elmina (approximately 1 hour) and visit the Elmina Castle, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest European structures in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Overnight at a hotel in Elmina (e.g., Elmina Beach Hotel & Spa).
Day 4: Kakum National Park & Axim
- Explore Kakum National Park further, going on guided nature walks or birdwatching.
- Drive to Axim (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes) and visit the Nzulezo Stilt Village, a unique traditional Ghanaian settlement built on stilts over water.
- Overnight at a hotel in Axim (e.g., Axim Beach Hotel).
Day 5: Mole National Park
- Drive to Mole National Park (approximately 4 hours), one of Ghana’s largest wildlife reserves.
- Take a safari tour to spot elephants, giraffes, and other wildlife.
- Enjoy the beautiful sunset over the park from the Mole Motel observation point.
- Overnight at Mole Motel or similar lodging within the park.
Day 6: Departure
- Drive back to Tamale (approximately 3 hours) for your return flight, or fly directly from Mole Domestic Airport if available.
- If time allows, visit the Tamale Arts Centre, where you can learn about and purchase traditional Ghanaian arts and crafts.
- Departure from Tamale’s Yagaba-Kukuo Airport (or Kotoka International Airport in Accra) to your next destination.
