Gambia 4-Day Travel Itinerary (Markdown Version)
Day 1: Arrival & Exploring Banjul
- Arrive at Yundum International Airport
- Check visa requirements: Most nationalities can obtain a Tourist Visa upon arrival for $50. (Always check the latest updates on Gambia’s Immigration Department website.)
- Transfer to your hotel in Banjul
- Recommended: Kololi Beach Hotel, Kerr Serigning Chambeh Road, Bakau, Kotu (4-star, beachfront accommodation)
- Lunch at a local restaurant
- Try “Domoda” (peanut stew), “Benachin” (rice and fish or meat), or “Bissap” (hibiscus drink)
- Afternoon visit to Albert Market & Independence Square
- Experience the vibrant local culture, shop for souvenirs, and learn about Gambia’s history at the Independence Monument
- Evening stroll along the Cape Point
- Enjoy the stunning sunset views over the Atlantic Ocean
Day 2: The Gambia River & Kunta Kinteh Island
- Morning transfer to Juffureh Village
- Approximately 1.5 hours drive from Banjul
- Visit the Kunta Kinteh Island
- Learn about the historical significance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, associated with “Roots” by Alex Haley
- Lunch at Juffureh’s ‘Alex Haley’s House’ Restaurant
- Savor a traditional Gambian meal while enjoying scenic views
- Afternoon boat cruise on the Gambia River
- Spot wildlife, visit local villages, and learn about the river’s importance to the people of Gambia
- Return to Banjul in the evening
- Rest and prepare for Day 3 adventures
Day 3: Wildlife & Wonders of Central River Region
- Morning transfer to Central River Region
- Approximately 2.5 hours drive from Banjul
- Visit Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve
- Observe a diverse range of birds, monkeys, and other wildlife in their natural habitat
- Lunch at a local restaurant
- Try the delicious local specialty, “Tigani” (rice with fish or meat)
- Afternoon visit to Wassu Stone Circles
- Explore this ancient site, one of several stone circles found in West Africa
- Evening return to Banjul
- Relax and prepare for the final day’s activities
Day 4: Beaches & Departure
- Morning leisure time at the beach
- Swim, sunbathe, or participate in water sports like jet skiing or paddleboarding
- Lunch at your hotel or a nearby restaurant
- Afternoon at leisure
- Spend some last moments shopping for souvenirs, exploring Banjul’s sights, or simply relaxing on the beach
- Transfer to Yundum International Airport for your flight home
Useful Tips:
- Currency: The official currency is Dalasi (D). Credit cards are accepted in larger establishments, but it’s always good to have local currency on hand.
- Language: English is the official language, making communication easier for most tourists. However, learning a few basic words in Wolof (the local language) will undoubtedly enrich your experience.
- Electricity: The power supply is mainly 240V AC, with British-style three-pin plugs.
- Health & Safety: Vaccinations are recommended for yellow fever, tetanus, and hepatitis A/B. Mosquito repellent is essential due to the presence of malaria-carrying mosquitos in some areas. Drink bottled water only.
