Faroe Islands 6-Day Itinerary: Exploring the “Islands between the Seas”
Day 1: Arrival in Vágar Island - Gásadalur & Trollkonufingur
- 🛫 Arrival at Vágar Airport: Start your journey with a flight to Vágar, one of the 18 islands forming the Faroe Islands.
- 🚌 Bus Ride to Gásadalur: Take a bus ride from the airport to the picturesque village of Gásadalur. Don’t forget to visit the famous Múlafossur waterfall along the way!
- 🏞️ Explore Gásadalur: Wander around the village and hike up to the beautiful Trollkonufingur (Troll Woman’s Finish) for breathtaking views.
- 💰 Currency: The Faroese Króna (DKK) is the official currency, although Euros are often accepted in tourist areas. Credit cards are widely accepted too.
Day 2: Sørvágar & Mykines Island - Puffins!
- 🚤 Ferry to Mykines: Catch a morning ferry to Mykines, an island famous for its enormous puffin colony. Remember to dress warmly!
- 🎿 Hiking in Mykines: Explore the island’s unique grassy roofs and enjoy the birdlife. Be sure not to disturb the puffins!
- 🚢 Return to Sørvágar: In the afternoon, return to Sørvágar and visit the beautiful village of Gammelbaur.
Day 3: Streymoy Island - Tórshavn & Kirkjubøur
- 🏙️ Tórshavn: Spend the morning exploring the capital city, Tórshavn. Visit the National Museum, the old town center (Rúsið), and take a stroll along the waterfront.
- 🏛️ Kirkjubøur: Head to Kirkjubøur, once the ecclesiastical capital of the Faroe Islands, and visit the beautiful St. Olav’s Church and the old farmstead of Mikladalur.
- 🎆 Sun Voyage: In the evening, join a Sun Voyage tour to see the stunning scenery from the ocean and learn about the islands’ history and folklore.
Day 4: Koltur Island - Archaeology & Nature
- 🚤 Ferry to Koltur: Take a morning ferry to Koltur, an uninhabited island with rich archaeological sites.
- 🔍 Archaeological Site: Explore the ancient settlement and Viking farm at Husaby, dating back to the 6th century!
- 🏞️ Nature Walk: Spend the afternoon hiking around Koltur, enjoying its diverse landscapes.
- 🌃 Stargazing: The Faroe Islands are renowned for their dark skies and excellent stargazing opportunities – perfect for night owls!
Day 5: Suðuroy Island - Coastal Villages & Lighthouses
- 🚤 Ferry to Suðuroy: Travel to Suðuroy, the most southerly and least populated of the main islands.
- 🏠 Visit Hvalba: Explore the quaint village of Hvalba, known for its charming houses and lighthouses.
- 🌊 Beaches: Enjoy a relaxing afternoon at one of Suðuroy’s beautiful beaches, such as Sandur or Kalur.
Day 6: Return to Vágar Island - Slættaratindur & Departure
- 🏞️ Slættaratindur Hike: If you haven’t already, hike up Slættaratindur, the highest point in the Faroe Islands. The views are simply unforgettable!
- 🚌 Bus Ride to Vágar Airport: Take a bus back to Vágar Airport for your departure. Safe travels, and until next time!
Visa Requirements: Citizens of the Schengen area, UK, Ireland, and US can visit the Faroe Islands without a visa for up to 90 days within a six-month period. For others, check the official Faroese immigration website before traveling.
Transportation: Buses and ferries are the main modes of transportation between the islands. A comprehensive travel pass is available for both buses and ferries, making it easy to explore the Faroe Islands. Renting a car can also be a great option if you prefer more flexibility.
