Costa Rica 6-Day Travel Itinerary
Day 1: San José (Arrival & City Exploration)
- Arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José.
- Check-in at a hotel and rest from your journey.
- Visit the National Museum, Gold Museum, or Casa Amarilla (Jade Museum).
- Stroll around Mercado Central for local food and souvenirs.
- Know Before You Go: Spanish is widely spoken in Costa Rica. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, but local currency (Colón) might be more beneficial in some instances.
Day 2: La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano
- Transportation: Book a shuttle or rent a car to La Fortuna (approximately 3 hours).
- Activities: Visit Arenal Volcano National Park, take a dip in the hot springs, and enjoy a night hike.
- Optional: Take a zip line tour, visit the La Fortuna Waterfall, or relax at Tabacón Hot Springs.
- Know Before You Go: Wear comfortable shoes for hiking, and check volcano activity status before visiting.
Day 3: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
- Transportation: Shuttle or car ride to Monteverde (approximately 2 hours).
- Activities: Explore the cloud forest with a guided tour, visit the Bat Jungle Exhibit, and take the Sky Walk.
- Optional: Visit the Butterfly Garden, Serpentarium, or the Frog’s Haven.
- Know Before You Go: Be prepared for cooler temperatures and wet weather.
Day 4: Guanacaste & Beach Day
- Transportation: Shuttle or car ride to Guanacaste (approximately 3 hours).
- Activities: Relax on one of the many beautiful beaches, such as Playa Tamarindo, Playa Conchal, or Playa Flamingo.
- Optional: Take a surf lesson, go snorkeling, or enjoy a catamaran tour.
- Know Before You Go: Be mindful of riptides and currents when swimming in the ocean.
Day 5: Tortuguero National Park
- Transportation: Early morning boat ride to Tortuguero (approximately 3 hours).
- Activities: Explore the canals, visit a turtle nesting site, and observe wildlife such as monkeys, sloths, and various bird species.
- Know Before You Go: This region is a rainforest, so pack accordingly: mosquito repellent, waterproof shoes, and rain gear.
Day 6: Return to San José & Departure
- Transportation: Boat ride back to the mainland, followed by shuttle or car ride to San José (approximately 3 hours).
- Relax at your hotel or explore any remaining city attractions before departing from SJO.
- Know Before You Go: Keep plenty of time for transportation and check-in procedures if you have an evening flight.
