Costa Rica 2-Day Itinerary

Day 1: San José & Surroundings

Morning:

  • Arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). Remember, if you’re not from visa-exempt countries, you may need a tourist visa. Check with your local embassy or consulate.
  • Transfer to your hotel in San José for check-in and freshen up.
  • Visit the National Museum of Costa Rica to learn about the country’s history and culture. Open daily from 9 AM – 4 PM.

Afternoon:

  • Lunch at a local restaurant, try traditional dishes such as Gallo Pinto (rice and beans), Casado (typical plate with rice, beans, salad, plantain and your choice of protein), or Sopa Negra (black bean soup).
  • Explore the Central Market (Mercado Central) for souvenirs and local products.
  • Short drive to Poás Volcano National Park. Note: The summit is at a high altitude, so remember warm clothing.

Evening:

  • Return to San José for dinner. We recommend dining in the Escazu area with many excellent restaurants offering international cuisine.

Day 2: Arenal Volcano & La Fortuna

Morning:

  • Early departure from San José to La Fortuna, a charming town near Arenal Volcano. The journey takes approximately 3 hours.
  • Arrive in La Fortuna and visit the Tabacón Hot Springs & Mud Baths for relaxation amidst natural beauty.
  • Lunch at a local restaurant offering traditional dishes with a twist.

Afternoon:

  • Visit Arenal Volcano National Park for hiking trails and breathtaking views of the active volcano. Note: Due to safety reasons, access to the summit is not allowed.
  • Optionally, embark on a canopy tour, ziplining through the lush rainforest.

Evening:

  • Return to La Fortuna for dinner. Try a restaurant specializing in local cuisine with a volcano view, such as Volcano Garden Grill or Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa.
  • Enjoy the nightlife and live music at local bars like Iguana’s Bar & Grill or El Silencio del Campo.

Transportation:

  • Rent a car for self-drive exploration, or book guided tours to maximize your time and learn more about Costa Rica’s history, culture, and natural attractions. Always ensure you have travel insurance and follow safe driving practices.

Additional Tips:

  • Pack light clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen, and rain gear for unpredictable weather.
  • Learn some basic Spanish phrases to help navigate and interact with locals.
