4-Day Itinerary for Traveling in Congo (DRC)
Day 1: Explore Kinshasa
Morning:
- Arrival at N’djili International Airport, Kinshasa.
- Check-in at a hotel and freshen up.
- Breakfast at your hotel or local restaurant.
Afternoon:
- Visit the Monument de la Liberté (Monument of Independence), a symbol of Congo’s independence.
- Explore the Marche Centrale, one of Africa’s largest markets.
- Visit Le Palais du Peuple, the headquarters of the Congolese government.
Evening:
- Experience local nightlife at bars and restaurants in Kinshasa such as La Sapeur or Le Mangalia.
Things to Know:
- French and Lingala are widely spoken. A basic knowledge can be helpful, but many locals understand English too.
- Be aware of petty crime, especially pickpocketing in crowded areas.
- Always respect local customs and traditions.
Day 2: Goma - Virunga National Park
Morning:
- Early morning flight to Goma (North Kivu).
- Transfer to Virunga National Park, home to half of the world’s mountain gorillas.
Afternoon:
- Gorilla trekking in the Virunga Massif. Remember, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Evening:
- Rest and share stories about your gorilla encounter at your lodge.
Day 3: Goma - Kisangani
Morning:
- Departure from Goma to Kisangani by plane or boat (Tembo River).
- Arrival in Kisangani and check-in at a hotel.
Afternoon:
- Visit the Tshopo Falls, one of Africa’s most powerful waterfalls.
- Explore the local markets and interact with locals.
Day 4: Kisangani - Departure
Morning:
- Free time for last-minute shopping or sightseeing in Kisangani.
- Transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
Visa Requirements:
- A tourist visa is required for most nationalities. It can be obtained at Congolese embassies or upon arrival at the airport (USD30).
Transportation:
- Domestic flights are available and are the fastest way to travel long distances in Congo. Boat trips can also be an interesting experience. Always check for safety before traveling by boat. Car rentals are available, but driving can be challenging due to poor road conditions.
