Three-Day Itinerary for Exploring Comoros

Day 1: Discovering Grand Comore (Ngazidja)

  1. Morning: Start your day with a traditional Comorian breakfast at your hotel or a local café. Then, head to the bustling city of Moroni, the capital of Comoros. Visit the Grand Mosque and Palais de la Nation, the official residence of the President.

  2. Afternoon: Travel to Mtsamboro Island, one of the Anjouan Islands, for a relaxing afternoon. Enjoy snorkeling, swimming, or just lounging on the beautiful white sand beaches. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the green sea turtles that frequent these waters!

  3. Evening: Return to Moroni and explore the local markets where you can find unique Comorian handicrafts, spices, and textiles. Have dinner at a local restaurant offering traditional Comorian cuisine like Sambusa (meat or vegetable filled pastries) and Wali wa nazi (coconut milk rice).

Day 2: Exploring Anjouan (Njazidja)

  1. Morning: Take a ferry to Anjouan Island early in the morning. Visit the Fondani Waterfall, take a dip in its refreshing waters, and hike through lush green forests.

  2. Afternoon: Head to Karthala Volcano, an active stratovolcano that last erupted in 2007. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to climb the volcano due to safety concerns, but you can admire its majestic beauty from a distance.

  3. Evening: Explore the town of Mutsamudu and visit the Mosque of Mutsamudu, one of the oldest mosques in Comoros. Have dinner at a local restaurant and enjoy some traditional music or dance performances.

Day 3: Witnessing Moheli’s Beauty (Mwali)

  1. Morning: Catch an early morning flight to Moheli, the smallest of the three main islands. Visit the village of Fomboni and learn about local customs and traditions.

  2. Afternoon: Head to Kirindy Marine Park for some incredible snorkeling or diving. The park is home to a diverse marine life, including dolphins, sea turtles, and colorful coral reefs.

  3. Evening: Relax on the beautiful beaches of Moheli, watch the sunset, and reflect on your incredible journey through Comoros. Have a farewell dinner at a local restaurant before retiring for the night.

Important Information:

  • Visa: All tourists require a tourist visa to enter Comoros. You can apply online or upon arrival at the airport. The cost is around $50 USD and valid for 30 days.

  • Transportation: Taxis are widely available in Moroni and Anjouan, while other islands may require private transportation. Ferry services connect Grand Comore and Anjouan, and flights link all three main islands.

  • Accommodation: There are various hotels and guesthouses throughout Comoros catering to different budgets. Make sure to book your accommodation in advance during peak season (June-August).

  • Safety: Comoros is generally a safe destination, but exercise caution, particularly in crowded areas or after dark. Always keep personal belongings secure and be mindful of your surroundings.
