Cocos (Keeling) Islands 7-Day Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Settling In
- Arrive at West Island’s Direction Island Airport. Complete immigration formalities and collect your checked luggage.
- Check into your accommodation. Choose from homestays, guesthouses, or the luxurious Cocos Islands Resort.
- Get familiar with your surroundings, explore the local shops, and relax on West Island’s pristine beaches.
- Take note: The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are part of Australia, so Australian Dollars (AUD) is the official currency. Credit/debit cards are widely accepted.
Day 2: Explore West Island
- Start your day with breakfast at a local café. Try the famous Cocos Island coconut crab omelette!
- Visit the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Visitor Centre to learn more about the islands’ history, culture, and conservation efforts.
- Spend the afternoon snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters around West Island, exploring coral reefs teeming with marine life.
- In the evening, join a local family for a home-cooked meal or dine at a restaurant on West Island.
Day 3: Visit Home Island
- Take a ferry to Home Island (the largest of the 27 islands) and immerse yourself in the local Malay culture.
- Explore the island, visit the local market, and interact with the friendly locals.
- Relax on Home Island’s beautiful beaches or go for a swim.
- In the afternoon, take part in a traditional coconut crab hunting expedition led by experienced guides.
Day 4: Direction Island & Snorkelling
- Spend the day at Direction Island, a small uninhabited island known for its stunning snorkelling opportunities.
- Pack a picnic lunch and spend the morning exploring the island’s coral reefs, spotting vibrant fish and unique marine life.
- In the afternoon, relax on the pristine white sand beach or take a nap in one of the sheltered hammocks.
Day 5: Oliver Roe Plateau & Scuba Diving
- Take a boat tour to Oliver Roe Plateau, a massive coral formation teeming with marine life.
- For certified scuba divers, dive among manta rays, turtles, and sharks in the crystal-clear waters.
- If you’re not a diver, snorkel or simply enjoy the breathtaking views from the boat.
- In the evening, return to West Island for dinner and some rest.
Day 6: Relax & Explore
- Spend a leisurely day exploring the hidden gems of West Island.
- Visit the historic Clipperton’s Grave, explore the mangroves, or take a stroll along one of the many scenic walking trails.
- Spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach, reading a book, or taking a nap under a palm tree.
- In the evening, enjoy a sunset dinner on West Island.
Day 7: Departure
- Spend your final day shopping for souvenirs, relaxing on the beach, and saying goodbye to the beautiful Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
- Head to the airport for your departure. Remember to allow plenty of time for check-in and security procedures.
Visa Requirements: As an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you do not need a visa to visit the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Other nationalities should check with their local Australian embassy regarding visa requirements.
Transportation: The best way to get around the islands is by boat or bicycle. Taxis are also available on West Island for short trips. Renting a bicycle or scooter is an excellent way to explore the islands independently.
