Botswana 7-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Gaborone

  • Arrive at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE) in Gaborone.
  • Check into your hotel and rest from the journey.
  • Visit Mokolodi Nature Reserve for an introductory taste of Botswana’s wildlife.
  • Dinner at a local restaurant, try traditional dishes such as Seswaa (beef stew) or Bogobe morogo (maize meal with greens).

Day 2: Explore Gaborone and Mokolodi

  • Morning visit to the National Museum and Botswana Craft in Gaborone for a deeper understanding of Botswana’s culture and history.
  • Afternoon safari at Mokolodi Nature Reserve, spotting wildlife such as zebras, giraffes, and rhinoceroses.
  • Evening city tour, visit the Three Dikes area for sunset views over the Modder River.

Day 3: Okavango Delta

  • Transfer to Maun (airport MUB) for your flight into the Okavango Delta.
  • Spend the day on a mokoro (traditional canoe) or boat safari, exploring the crystal-clear waters and observing wildlife such as hippos, crocodiles, and an incredible variety of birdlife.
  • Overnight at a luxury tented camp in the delta.

Day 4-5: Okavango Delta

  • Spend two days exploring the delta, taking guided walks, game drives, and boat safaris to spot animals such as lions, elephants, and leopards.
  • Enjoy sunset cocktails overlooking the delta, and immerse yourself in the tranquility of this pristine wilderness.

Day 6: Chobe National Park

  • Transfer back to Maun for your flight to Kasane (airport SBW) on the banks of the Chobe River in Chobe National Park.
  • Afternoon game drive in the park, known for its large elephant herds and diverse wildlife.
  • Overnight at a lodge overlooking the Chobe River.

Day 7: Departure

  • Morning river cruise on the Chobe River, spotting hippos, crocodiles, and an array of birds.
  • Transfer to Kasane Airport (SBW) for your departure flight.

Things to Know:

  • Botswana’s currency is the Pula (BWP). Major credit cards are accepted in larger towns and cities but cash is often necessary when venturing into the bush.
  • Malaria is present in Botswana, so ensure you take appropriate malaria medication before travel.
  • English is widely spoken in Botswana.
  • A valid passport with at least six months’ validity from your date of entry is required for most nationalities to enter Botswana. Visas are not required for many nationalities but should be checked prior to travel.

Transportation:

  • Flights between major towns and cities such as Gaborone, Maun, and Kasane are provided by Air Botswana, South African Airways, and a number of other regional carriers.
  • Ground transport within Botswana is usually provided by 4x4 vehicles for safari activities, or domestic flights if you’re short on time.
  • Taxis and hire cars can be found in Gaborone and Maun, but the roads outside of these cities are often unsealed and require a 4x4 vehicle.
  • Always ensure your travel insurance covers you for any activities you plan to participate in during your trip.
