Bolivia 2 Day Itinerary
Day 1: La Paz & Tiwanaku
Morning:
- Arrival at El Alto International Airport, La Paz. (Note: Due to its high altitude, it’s advisable to rest for a while and acclimatize.)
- Visit the Witches’ Market (Mercado de Hechiceria): A unique market where you can find local remedies, traditional handicrafts, and offerings for Pachamama (Mother Earth).
Afternoon:
- Head to the Museo de la Ciudad: This museum offers a historical overview of La Paz and its indigenous culture.
- Explore the vibrant San Francisco Church: Known for its beautiful baroque architecture and colonial art.
- Visit Museo Nacional de Arte: Showcasing Bolivian art from pre-Columbian times to modern day.
Evening:
- Enjoy a traditional Bolivian dinner at one of the local restaurants in Zona Sur (Southern Zone) or Sopocachi neighborhoods.
- Relax and rest for the night as tomorrow is a packed day!
Day 2: Tiwanaku & Lake Titicaca
Morning:
- Early departure to Tiwanaku: An ancient city built by the Tiwanaku culture, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (Approx. 1 hour drive from La Paz)
- Explore the archaeological ruins, temples, and the famous Gate of the Sun.
Afternoon:
- Post lunch, travel to Lake Titicaca: The highest navigable lake in the world. (Approx. 3 hours drive from Tiwanaku)
- Take a boat tour to the Uros Floating Islands: Made entirely from totora reeds, these islands are home to the Uros people.
- Visit Taquile Island: Known for its traditional textiles and beautiful landscapes.
Evening:
- Return to La Paz in the evening.
- Enjoy a final dinner at Lokal restaurant, which offers dishes made from local ingredients and traditional recipes.
Visa Requirements:
- Citizens of many countries can enter Bolivia visa-free for up to 30 days. However, it’s always best to check the current visa requirements for your nationality on the official Bolivian government website before travel.
Transportation:
- Taxis and shared minivans (micros) are common means of transportation in La Paz and its surrounding areas. For longer trips, you can book a private car or take a bus.
Things to Know:
- Bolivia uses the Boliviano (BOB) as its currency. Credit cards are accepted in most cities but it’s always good to carry some cash.
- Spanish is the official language, although Quechua and Aymara are widely spoken too.
- Be prepared for high altitudes: La Paz is over 3600 meters above sea level. Drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activities on your first day to help acclimatize.
