Bhutan 5-Day Itinerary: Exploring the Land of Thunder Dragons
Day 1 - Arrival at Paro (2,250 meters)
- Flight into Paro is one of the most scenic flights in the world. Upon arrival, clear visa formalities and meet your local guide.
- Visit Ta Dzong (National Museum) to get an overview of Bhutanese culture and history. Then walk down to Rinpung Dzong, the administrative seat of Paro district.
- Drive towards Thimphu, the capital city (2 hours). En-route, stop at Chuzom, the confluence of Paro and Thimphu rivers, where you can see three different styles of traditional Bhutanese bridges.
- Evening at leisure in Thimphu.
- Things to know: English is widely spoken, and tipping is not customary but appreciated.
Day 2 - Exploring Thimphu
- Visit the Memorial Chorten, a stupa built in 1974 in memory of Bhutan’s third king.
- Walk around the traditional markets of Thimphu for souvenirs and local food.
- Visit the National Library which houses the world’s largest collection of Buddhist literature.
- In the afternoon, visit the School of Arts & Crafts (Zorig Chusum) to witness students learning 13 traditional crafts.
- If time permits, drive to Sangaygang Viewpoint for a panoramic view of Thimphu valley.
Day 3 - Punakha (1,200 meters)
- Drive to Punakha (approximately 3 hours) via Dochula Pass (3,050 meters). Stop at Dochula for tea and the 108 chortens and prayer flags.
- Visit Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility), a short walk from the road.
- Explore Punakha Dzong, the winter residence of Bhutan’s Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot) and the Central Monastic Body.
Day 4 - Wangduephodrang & Return to Thimphu
- Drive to Wangduephodrang (approximately 1 hour). Visit Wangduephodrang Dzong, one of the most majestic dzongs in Bhutan.
- After lunch, return to Thimphu and visit Tashichho Dzong, a fortress housing the throne room, offices of the King, and the Central Monk Body.
Day 5 - Paro (2,250 meters) & Departure
- Early morning hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), one of Bhutan’s most iconic sites. The trek takes about 4-5 hours round trip.
- After lunch in Paro, transfer to the airport for your flight out.
Visa & Transportation:
- All foreigners require a visa to enter Bhutan. It is arranged through a licensed local tour operator.
- The only international flights are to/from Paro. Most tours include transport within Bhutan by car or minivan.
