Beyond Jerusalem 5 Day Itinerary

Five days based in Jerusalem: three day trips (the Dead Sea and Masada, Bethlehem, Tel Aviv) plus a fifth day back in the city for the two sights heavy sightseeing days keep pushing out, Yad Vashem and the Israel Museum. Drop to the 4-day itinerary if a slower city day doesn’t fit, or add Jericho with the 6-day version .

Day 1: Arrival and an Old City taste

Land, check into a base near the Old City or the German Colony, and keep the afternoon light rather than packed. Walk from Jaffa Gate to the Western Wall plaza (free, open 24 hours, modest dress required) and back through the Jewish Quarter, about 20 minutes each way. Landing Friday afternoon means transit stops for Shabbat until Saturday evening, a short taxi or Gett ride covers the same ground.

Day 2: Dead Sea and Masada

Tours typically leave by 6:30-7am, about 90 minutes down through the Judean Desert to the lowest point on Earth. The cable car covers Masada’s climb in a few minutes (combined with entry, roughly NIS 59-77, about $20-26); the Snake Path alternative draws a genuine sunrise crowd who hike it before dawn for the light over the desert. Float in the Dead Sea afterward; the shore is rocky and salt-crusted, so water shoes beat bare feet. Most tours fold in Ein Gedi Nature Reserve (roughly NIS 28-29, about $9) on the way back. Day 3: Bethlehem

Bus 231 from Damascus Gate, or a permitted taxi, crosses Checkpoint 300 into the West Bank without passengers disembarking; carry your passport and ETA-IL entry record for the return. The Church of the Nativity is the reason to go, and a focused half-day covers it properly. Check your government’s current travel advisory before booking this leg. Return to Jerusalem by early evening.

Day 4: Tel Aviv

The A1 line runs direct from Yitzhak Navon station in roughly 30-35 minutes, fares from NIS 31 (about $10). Spend the day on the beach, the Carmel Market, and Jaffa’s old port; give it a full day rather than squeezing it after a heavy morning elsewhere, the coastline and the pace are different enough to earn that.

Day 5: Yad Vashem and the Israel Museum

Use the fifth day to catch the city sights that don’t fit around three day trips. Yad Vashem , Israel’s Holocaust memorial on Mount Herzl, is free but needs a reservation with a small booking fee, closed Saturdays, and deserves a genuine three hours rather than a rushed hour before lunch. The Israel Museum holds the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Shrine of the Book pavilion plus a large archaeology wing, adult entry roughly NIS 54 ($18), with a later Tuesday-evening opening. Do these two sights need advance booking? Yes, both. Yad Vashem requires a reservation with a small non-refundable fee even though entry itself is free, and the Israel Museum’s online ticket smooths entry, especially around its Tuesday evening slot. Neither takes walk-ups reliably during busy periods.

Before you go

Confirm pickup times for the Dead Sea, Bethlehem, and Tel Aviv legs the night before each, and book Yad Vashem and the Israel Museum online at least a day ahead of Day 5. Pack a swimsuit for Tuesday, your passport for Wednesday, and comfortable walking shoes for Thursday and Friday alike, this trip has more transit days than rest days.
