Bahamas 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Seven days is the first length in this cluster honest enough to hold two Out Islands, and the honest version of that plan spends real hours on flights and connections getting between them, not just standing on them once you land. Two days cover Nassau and Paradise Island, three days move to Exuma for the swimming pigs, Thunderball Grotto and Compass Cay’s nurse sharks, and the last two land on Harbour Island for the pink sand and a Glass Window Bridge day trip. US dollars spend everywhere at full face value, a passport is the only paperwork required, and every leg between islands means a flight or a ferry, never a rental car. None of it is cheap either: this runs closer to US resort-market pricing than a budget Caribbean trip.

Days 1-2 repeat the same Nassau ground as the 2-day and 3-day versions of this trip. Days 3-5 build the same Exuma stay as the 4-day and 5-day plans, and the 6-day itinerary is this same route minus the Harbour Island half. What’s new here is the back half of the week: a real second Out Island instead of stopping at Exuma.

Day 1: Paradise Island, and the Atlantis decision

Clear immigration at Lynden Pindling International with just a passport, no pre-arrival health form has been required since June 2022, and skip any hunt for a currency exchange counter, US dollars spend here at full face value. A taxi to Paradise Island runs a government-fixed rate; agree the fare before the door closes, meters aren’t standard.

The Atlantis Aquaventure day pass is the trip’s first real decision. Skip it if a water park isn’t the reason you’re here: Cabbage Beach, the same white sand outside the resort gates, is public and free, and Baha Mar’s Baha Bay on Cable Beach is the real alternative if the slides matter but the Atlantis brand doesn’t. Close the day with dinner off the resort strip.

Day 2: Downtown Nassau, before the flight out

Do Bay Street and the Straw Market early, before the sidewalks fill with whichever cruise ships are in port that morning. Haggle at the Straw Market, and carry small cash since card readers aren’t universal at the stalls. From there it’s a short walk to the Queen’s Staircase, 65-plus steps hand-carved by enslaved laborers in the late 18th century, leading up to Fort Fincastle for the harbor view.

Spend the afternoon at Junkanoo Beach, public and free, or at Arawak Cay’s Fish Fry for cracked conch and conch salad made fresh at the counter. Book your Nassau-to-Exuma flight tonight if you haven’t already: Bahamasair, the national carrier, and Western Air both run the route, and morning departures sell out first in peak season. Day 3: Nassau to Exuma, the day the real trip starts

The flight from Nassau to Exuma runs roughly 30-40 minutes, landing at George Town’s own international airport if you’re basing there, or a small airstrip at Staniel Cay if you want to be a short boat ride from the pigs. Either way it’s a flight, not a bridge or a highway, this whole archipelago runs on planes and ferries between islands, never a road.

Settle in for the afternoon: walk George Town if that’s your base, or get straight on the water at Staniel Cay. Stocking Island’s sandbar and Chat N’ Chill are worth the afternoon if you land early enough, and this is also the day to confirm tomorrow’s boat charter directly with your operator, cell signal and email response times both slow down once you’re off New Providence.

Day 4: Swimming pigs, Thunderball Grotto and Compass Cay’s sharks

This is the day the whole Exuma stop was built around. Big Major Cay’s swimming pigs are genuinely feral animals, not a petting zoo, so follow your operator’s feeding instructions and skip the junk food and alcohol, a handful of pigs died in 2017 from exactly that kind of casual overfeeding. Thunderball Grotto, the sea cave from the 1965 Bond film, is a legitimately good snorkel stop nearby, best timed near low tide when the light comes through the ceiling holes.

Compass Cay’s resident nurse sharks round out the circuit, swimmable in shallow water under the resident guides’ supervision, a genuine add-on rather than a given, confirm your operator includes it. A full chartered day covering all three runs long and isn’t cheap, but you’re not burning half of it on transit the way a Nassau day-tripper does.

Day 5: Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, and locking in Harbour Island

Spend the morning in or near the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, a protected marine and land reserve covering many of the northern cays, a no-take zone that’s a real reason the water out here still looks the way it does in the photos. A slower boat ride or an afternoon back at Stocking Island both work if you’d rather not book a second full excursion.

Use the evening to lock down tomorrow’s transit. Getting from Exuma to Harbour Island isn’t a single hop, there’s no direct flight or ferry between the two, so the route runs back through Nassau regardless: either a domestic flight to North Eleuthera plus a short water taxi, or, if your dates land on a Wednesday, Friday or Sunday, the Bahamas Ferries catamaran direct from Potter’s Cay. Confirm the connection times before you sleep, not at the airport the next morning.

Day 6: Back through Nassau, on to Harbour Island

Fly Exuma to Nassau first, roughly 30-40 minutes on Bahamasair or Western Air, then pick your onward route: a domestic flight to North Eleuthera, or, on a Wednesday, Friday or Sunday, the Bahamas Ferries catamaran straight from Potter’s Cay to Harbour Island, about $55 one-way. Either way this is the longest travel day of the week, budget it as a full one and don’t plan anything demanding for the other end.

If you flew, a short water taxi, about 10 minutes, crosses from North Eleuthera to Harbour Island itself; the ferry lands there directly. From the dock, a golf cart, not a rental car, is how you get around, Lulu’s, Major’s and Dunmore Rentals all deliver with gas included. Grab one and spend what’s left of the afternoon wandering Dunmore Town’s pastel lanes on foot before you’re driving them.

Day 7: Pink Sand Beach, the Glass Window Bridge, and the flight home

Pink Sand Beach looks best in the late afternoon light, when the crushed coral in the sand actually shows its color, so don’t rush straight there in the morning. Spend the earlier hours on a golf-cart day trip across to Eleuthera’s mainland for the Glass Window Bridge, the narrow point where the calm Bight of Eleuthera and the open Atlantic sit on either side of a single road, a genuinely striking stop most Nassau-only visitors never see.

Flying home from Harbour Island isn’t direct either: connect back through Nassau, where US-bound travelers clear US preclearance at Lynden Pindling International itself and land stateside already “domestic.” Budget real buffer for that last connection, inter-island schedules run only a handful of times daily and there’s no slack if you miss one.

Do you need a visa for The Bahamas?

Is US money accepted in The Bahamas?

Yes, everywhere, at full face value. The Bahamian dollar has been pegged 1 to 1 to the US dollar since 1966, and both circulate side by side in Nassau hotels, Exuma lodges and Harbour Island guesthouses alike. Don’t bother finding an exchange counter or asking for Bahamian currency specifically, change comes back in whichever bills the register has, and it spends the same either way.

Is a two-island week worth the transit time?

Only if you go in with eyes open about how much of Days 3 and 6 actually gets spent on planes, docks and connections rather than beaches. This route is honest about that cost; a version that pretends three islands’ worth of full days fit into a week with no transit tax is the one to be skeptical of.

If your real interest is diving, fishing or sailing rather than pigs and pink sand, swap Harbour Island for Grand Bahama (Lucayan National Park’s cave system, still rebuilding unevenly since Hurricane Dorian but genuinely open), Andros (bonefishing and the world’s highest concentration of blue holes) or the Abacos (a sailing hub around Hope Town, also rebuilt since Dorian), each a legitimate second Out Island for a repeat visitor with a narrower interest than the first-timer route above.

Is 7 days enough for the Bahamas?

Enough for a genuine two-island trip that doesn’t shortchange either stop, not enough to call it the whole archipelago, The Bahamas is roughly 700 islands and this route touches three of them.

The Bahamas is its own independent country, not a US state or Puerto Rico, and the US State Department rates it Level 2 , “Exercise Increased Caution,” with actual crime concentrated in Nassau’s Over the Hill district south of Shirley Street, not the resort strip, Bay Street or the Out Islands, which are consistently low-crime by comparison. Traveling June through November puts you in hurricane season, peak risk roughly mid-August to mid-October, worth a travel insurance policy that covers trip interruption.

One concrete tip: confirm every inter-island connection, Exuma to Nassau, Nassau to Eleuthera, and the flight home, by email before you leave New Providence the first time. This itinerary has three separate places for a missed connection to cascade, and operators would rather rebook you a day ahead of trouble than the morning of it.
