Assisi 5-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Exploring Assisi’s Historic Center
Arrival: Reach Assisi by train or car. The nearest airports are Perugia (PEG) and Rome (FCO, CIA). From there, you can take a bus or rent a car to reach Assisi.
Lunch: Try local Umbrian cuisine at “Antica Osteria da Cencio” or “Trattoria S. Rufino”.
Afternoon: Visit the Basilica di San Francesco d’Assisi and its beautiful Giotto’s frescoes. Then, explore the Piazza del Comune, the heart of Assisi.
Dinner: Enjoy dinner at “Il Mercato Ristorante” or “La Piciola”, both offering authentic Umbrian dishes.
Day 2: Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli & Saint Clare’s Church
Morning: Head to the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli, where St. Francis used to live and preach. Visit the Portiuncola, a small chapel inside the basilica, considered sacred by Franciscans.

Day 3: Assisi’s Medieval Walls & Rocca Maggiore
Morning: Start your day by exploring the Assisi’s medieval walls. Walk along them for beautiful views of the town and surrounding countryside.
Lunch: Visit “Trattoria La Grotta di S. Francesco” for a traditional Umbrian lunch.
Afternoon: Head to the Rocca Maggiore, Assisi’s main fortress, built around 1170. Climb its towers for breathtaking panoramic views of the city and valley below.

Day 4: Day Trip to Spello & Montefalco
Morning: Take a day trip to the nearby hill towns of Spello and Montefalco. Explore Spello’s beautiful frescoes, especially the “Cyclops” in the Church of San Fortunato. In Montefalco, taste the famous Sagrantino wine at local wineries such as Arnaldo Caprai or La Cervaraia.

Return to Assisi: Spend the evening strolling through Assisi, shopping for local crafts and souvenirs.

Day 5: Departure
Morning: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in Assisi before checking out from your accommodation. Spend the morning exploring any sights you may have missed or revisiting favorite spots.
Lunch: Have a farewell lunch at “Il Posto” or “La Terrazza di San Francesco”.
Departure: Depending on your travel plans, take the train or drive to the nearest airport for your departure.

- Assisi is a hill town, so wear comfortable shoes.
- Many sites require modest clothing, especially shoulders and knees should be covered.
- The best time to visit Assisi is from April to October.
- Purchase the Assisi Card for unlimited access to all major sites in Assisi.
- Italian is the main language spoken; however, many people in tourism-related jobs speak English.
- Umbrellas are useful as the town can get rainy at times.
