Amsterdam City Breaks: 7 Day Itinerary
Seven days keeps the 6-day version’s Maastricht overnight and adds one more day from Maastricht itself, rather than a sixth city squeezed in for its own sake: Vaals, and the Drielandenpunt where the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany meet. Days 1 through 6 don’t change: Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and Delft, Giethoorn, then two full days in Maastricht.

Day 1: Rotterdam
The Intercity Direct takes about 40 minutes. Cover the Markthal, the Cube Houses and Kijk-Kubus show-house, and the Erasmusbrug, adding the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen art storage building if you have an extra hour.
Day 2: Utrecht
About 25 to 27 minutes by Intercity, cheaper off-peak. Climb the guided-only Dom Tower , then walk the Oudegracht at both levels and eat lunch at a werfkelder restaurant at water height.
Day 3: The Hague and Delft
Around 50 minutes direct to The Hague for the Mauritshuis , then 8 to 10 minutes further to Delft for the canals and the Royal Delft factory . Budget roughly EUR 70-90 per person.
Day 4: Giethoorn
No train reaches the village itself: NS to Zwolle or Steenwijk, then bus 70 or the seasonal bus 270 (April-October). Total travel is 2 to 2.5 hours each way, about EUR 58 return. Rent a small electric boat on arrival and confirm your return bus before you set out.
Day 5: Maastricht, arrival
The direct Intercity takes roughly 2 hours 23 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes, around EUR 30-37 one-way at full fare. Check into your hotel, then spend the late afternoon on Vrijthof square and the Basilica of Saint Servatius before dinner in the old town, which already feels more Burgundian than Dutch Golden Age.
Day 6: Maastricht, in full
Spend the morning at the Sint Pietersberg marl caves , a 60km network used to hide the country’s most valuable art during the Second World War, then the Bonnefanten Museum in the afternoon. Stay over a second night; Day 7 heads out from Maastricht rather than back to Amsterdam.
Day 7: Vaals and the Drielandenpunt, then home
An Arriva bus from Maastricht station reaches Vaals in about 49 minutes, running every 30 minutes, for a few euros. From the bus stop, it’s a walk up to the Drielandenpunt, the Netherlands’ highest point on the mainland at 322.4 meters, where the Dutch, Belgian, and German borders meet at a single marker. Head back to Maastricht by early afternoon for the direct Intercity to Amsterdam, another 2 hours 23 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes, landing you back at Centraal by evening.
Is the Vaals and Drielandenpunt day trip worth adding to a Maastricht stay?
Yes, specifically because it’s a short, simple add-on rather than another full logistics project: under an hour each way by a bus that runs twice an hour, versus Giethoorn’s infrequent connection or Maastricht’s own long train ride. Standing where three countries meet is a genuinely different souvenir than a fourth Dutch city.
Do I need to book anything for the Vaals day trip?
No. The Arriva bus runs on a fixed, frequent schedule with no reservation needed, and the Drielandenpunt itself is an open outdoor site with no ticket or timed entry. It’s the one day on this entire itinerary that requires no advance booking at all.
Should I do Vaals before or after the main Maastricht sights?
After. The Sint Pietersberg caves and the Bonnefanten Museum on Day 6 both benefit from a full, unhurried day, while Vaals is a half-day trip that pairs naturally with an afternoon train back to Amsterdam on Day 7, closing the trip rather than opening it.
Keep your Maastricht hotel booking through the morning of Day 7 rather than checking out on Day 6; the Vaals trip and the train home both leave from Maastricht, so there’s no reason to move your bag a day early.
