2 Days: San Francisco Plus NorCal

Two days here is not a city itinerary; it’s a Northern California add-on for people who are giving San Francisco itself its own separate two days (our city itinerary covers Alcatraz, cable cars and the bridge properly). Keep day one light, then hand day two entirely to Muir Woods and Sausalito, the shortest, highest-payoff trip outside the city.

Day 1: Land, settle in, one easy evening

BART into downtown from SFO runs about 25-30 minutes for $10-11, plus a roughly $5.51 airport surcharge, cheaper and more reliable than fighting rideshare surge pricing straight off a flight. If San Francisco itself, Alcatraz, cable cars, the bridge on foot, isn’t already booked into a separate visit, that’s genuinely a different trip; don’t try to wedge it into today. Get a Clipper card, drop your bags, and have dinner in North Beach or the Mission. Save the energy; tomorrow is the actual point of this two-day plan.

Day 2: Muir Woods and Sausalito

Pick up the rental car this morning, or meet your tour pickup, and cross the bridge. Muir Woods needs that reservation booked in advance, parking around $10 a car or a shuttle seat around $4 round trip, plus a $15-per-person entrance fee on arrival that catches people who only budgeted for the reservation itself. Walk the main loop, an easy 1-2 hours among old-growth redwoods, then drive 10 minutes down into Sausalito for lunch on the water. Cross back before evening bridge traffic thickens, or take the 30-minute Golden Gate Ferry back from Sausalito ($14 one-way) if you left the car in the city and joined a tour instead.

Is 2 extra days enough for a real Northern California trip?

Enough for one, not two. Muir Woods and Sausalito pair naturally into a single day because they’re 10 minutes apart and both light on time; trying to add Napa or Point Reyes into the same 48 hours means rushing one of the three and enjoying none of them properly. Add a third day if wine country matters to you.

Do you need to rent a car for just one day trip?

Not necessarily. A rental beats a guided tour on cost the moment two people split it, but a small-group tour with hotel pickup removes the bridge driving and the parking search entirely, worth the premium if you’re travelling solo or would rather not navigate an unfamiliar interchange on vacation.
