NASA satellites recorded a land surface temperature of 70.7°C (159.3°F) in the Lut Desert in 2005, a figure that has held as the highest ground temperature ever measured on Earth. In five of the seven years NASA studied between 2003 and 2009, the hottest point on the planet was the same dark gravel plateau in southeastern Iran called Gandom Beryan, “the place where wheat is scorched.” Nothing grows there. Nothing lives there. It is, in a straightforward sense, the most hostile surface on Earth in summer, which makes it one of the more remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Sites on the list. Iran inscribed it in 2016 as its first natural World Heritage property.
What the Lut Desert Is
Dasht-e Lut spans roughly 51,800 square kilometres across the provinces of Kerman, Sistan-Baluchestan, and South Khorasan in southeastern Iran. The name translates approximately as “barren plain,” which is accurate but fails to capture the visual variety. The desert divides into three distinct zones moving roughly north to south and west to east.
The northern and western sections are rocky plateau (hamada) and salt flats. The central zone contains the Kaluts, a field of wind-eroded ridges called yardangs that are considered the finest and most extensive examples of this landform type anywhere in the world. Individual kaluts in the Lut reach 155 metres in height, with unbroken ridgelines extending more than 40 kilometres. They are large enough to be clearly identifiable in satellite imagery. The southern and eastern section holds the Rig-e Yalan sand sea, with dunes reaching 475 metres, among the tallest on Earth.
The extreme aridity comes from a combination of factors: mountains to the north and west create a rain shadow, and the basin’s depth traps heated air. Average annual rainfall in the core desert is under 20 millimetres.
Access and Realistic Visitor Information
The Lut Desert is not an easy destination, and visitors need to understand the context before planning a trip.
Iran travel advisories: As of 2026, the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada maintain “do not travel” or equivalent highest-level advisories for Iran. Travel to the country is not impossible but carries significant risks for citizens of these countries that go beyond ordinary travel inconvenience. Citizens of many other nationalities can visit Iran legally with significantly less complication, and some qualify for visa-on-arrival at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport. US, UK, and Canadian citizens are excluded from the e-Visa system entirely and must arrange travel through licensed Iranian tour operators who take responsibility for the itinerary. This is not bureaucratic detail: in practice it means independent travel for these passport holders is not possible.
For eligible nationalities, Iran is visited by substantial numbers of European and Asian tourists each year. Tour operators based in Tehran (SurfIran, IranAmaze, and others) run structured Lut Desert expeditions that handle all logistics including Kerman airport transfers, 4WD desert transport, and camp accommodation. These tours typically run three to five days.
Getting to the desert: The main gateway is Shahdad, a small town on the western edge of the desert accessible by road from Kerman (around 100 kilometres). Kerman has a domestic airport with connections to Tehran. The Kaluts geopark near Shahdad is the standard starting point for guided tours of the yardang formations.
What to See
The Kaluts are the central attraction. The best way to appreciate their scale is to walk into them from the edge rather than viewing them from a vehicle. The light conditions change dramatically across the day: at midday the formations appear bleached and somewhat flat; at dawn and dusk the oblique light creates deep shadows in the gullies between ridges, and the structures become three-dimensional and imposing in a way that photographs rarely capture adequately.
Gandom Beryan is the black basalt plateau where the hottest temperatures are recorded. It is darker than surrounding surfaces, which is why it absorbs more solar radiation; satellite imagery shows it as a bright area in infrared. Visiting in summer is not survivable without extreme preparation. Spring and autumn visitors can reach it without such risk but should be aware that even in April, midday temperatures here are significantly higher than in the surrounding desert.
The Rig-e Yalan sand sea in the southeast contains dunes that are among the largest on Earth by height. Access requires a multi-day expedition with proper desert logistics.
Stargazing: the Lut Desert has minimal light pollution and exceptionally clear, dry air. Night skies here are extraordinary by almost any standard. Tours that include an overnight camp in the Kaluts specifically for night sky observation are available and worth arranging.
Best Time to Visit
October through March is the practical window. November and December offer mild daytime temperatures (15 to 25°C) and cold but not severe nights. February and March can bring brief rain to the fringes of the desert, which reveals the salt flat patterns more clearly. April is still acceptable but heat builds rapidly from May onward.
Do not visit between June and September unless you are part of a scientific expedition with dedicated heat-management equipment. This is not a precaution against discomfort; it is a survival question.
What to Bring
Water is the primary consideration. Standard guidance for organised tours is four to six litres per person per day outside summer months, more in spring if temperatures rise unexpectedly. Tours provide water but knowing the requirement helps when self-supplying any portion of the journey.
The combination of extreme aridity and high UV intensity at desert altitudes means sun protection must cover all exposed skin. Full-length loose clothing is more effective than sunscreen alone. Eye protection against both UV and wind-blown dust or sand is essential.
Navigation equipment matters: the desert is disorienting and GPS satellite coverage is the only reliable method once you are more than a few kilometres from the edge. Organised tours handle navigation but independent drivers have become lost in the Lut with serious consequences.
Geology and UNESCO Criteria
The Lut Desert meets two of UNESCO’s natural criteria. It qualifies under criterion (vii) for its exceptional natural beauty, specifically the scale and form of the yardang landscape and the sand sea. It qualifies under criterion (viii) as an outstanding example of geological processes, specifically aeolian (wind) erosion and deposition. The kaluts represent one of the most complete and unmodified records of yardang formation available for scientific study anywhere.
The desert also functions as a natural laboratory for astrobiology: researchers investigating whether life could survive on Mars and similar planets use the Gandom Beryan plateau as a proxy for Martian surface conditions, because both the temperature extremes and the chemical environment are among the closest terrestrial analogues available. Studies have found no life in soil samples from the hottest zones, which is itself scientifically significant.
A Practical Note on Photography
The yardang formations are photogenic in the obvious ways but also reward patience. The colour of the sedimentary layers in the kaluts varies from cream to rust to deep red depending on mineral content, and these gradations are best captured in the hour after sunrise or before sunset. Wide-angle lenses that can take in the full height of a kalut from its base require being close to the formation, which means dust. Lens protection matters more here than in most environments.
The Lut Desert is difficult to get to and genuinely dangerous to underestimate. For visitors who can navigate the access requirements, it offers a landscape of a kind that exists nowhere else with the same clarity or scale.
