The ice fields on Kilimanjaro’s summit covered 11.4 square kilometres in 1912. By 2019, they covered 1.5 square kilometres. The most recent projections put their complete disappearance between 2040 and 2050, depending on conditions. What is counterintuitive about this is that the primary mechanism is not warming air temperatures, summit temperatures remain consistently below freezing, but sublimation: solar radiation converting ice directly to vapour without liquid water forming. The mountain is effectively being scoured from above rather than melted from below. For anyone considering climbing Kilimanjaro, this is not merely interesting background information. The glaciers and permanent ice that most summit photographs show are going. If seeing them matters to you, the window is narrowing.
UNESCO inscribed Kilimanjaro National Park in 1987. At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak on the Kibo crater rim is the highest point in Africa. The mountain is a stratovolcano, geologically young in geological terms, and the three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, represent different stages and eruption histories. Kibo is potentially dormant rather than extinct; fumarolic activity continues in the crater.
The Routes: What Actually Matters
Seven established routes lead to the summit. Choosing intelligently between them is the single most consequential decision a climber makes about their Kilimanjaro trip, and most people who research this inadequately end up on a route that minimizes their chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.
The overall summit success rate across all routes and operators averages around 65 to 70 percent. The variation by route duration is large:
Five-day routes: approximately 27 percent success rate. The body does not acclimatize to 5,895 metres in five days. These should be avoided.
Six-day routes: approximately 50 to 60 percent success rate. Better, but still leaves significant time pressure.
Seven-day routes: approximately 75 to 85 percent success rate, depending on route.
Eight or nine-day routes: 85 to 95 percent success rate. The Northern Circuit over nine days achieves the highest success rates on the mountain.
Every additional day at altitude gives the body more time to produce additional red blood cells and adjust to lower oxygen partial pressure. The financial saving of a shorter route is not worth the reduction in summit probability.
The Main Routes
Machame (7 days): The most popular route, following the southern slopes. The “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization profile on day four (ascending to above 4,600 metres then descending to camp at 3,950 metres) is effective. The route is scenic and well-maintained but crowded, particularly in the peak January-February and July-September windows. Seven-day Machame achieves around 80 to 85 percent success rates with experienced operators.
Lemosho (8 days): Enters from the west through remote rainforest, traverses the Shira Plateau, and joins the Machame route at Lava Tower. The additional approach days through less-visited terrain and the extra acclimatization time make eight-day Lemosho the best balance of experience and summit probability for most climbers, with success rates around 90 percent. Less crowded than Machame for the first three days before the routes converge.
Northern Circuit (9-10 days): The longest route, circling the northern slopes of Kibo before the summit push. The best acclimatization profile of any standard route and the highest success rates, but also the most expensive due to duration. Genuinely remote for the first several days.
Marangu (6 days): The only route with dormitory hut accommodation instead of camping. Historically marketed as the “easiest” route; summit success rates average 65 percent, below most other standard routes. The huts attract a particular kind of climber who underestimates the altitude challenge.
Rongai (7 days): The only route approaching from the north, through Kenya-facing slopes that are drier and sometimes clearer in the wet seasons. A reasonable alternative when southern approach routes are in cloud and rain.
Umbwe (6 days): The steepest and most direct route. Used primarily by experienced high-altitude climbers seeking a challenge; success rates on the standard six-day itinerary are below average. Not recommended for first-time high-altitude climbers.
Park Fees
TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority) sets fees that vary by route duration. A typical seven-day climb incurs approximately $60 per day in park entry fees, $50 per day in camping/hut fees, and a one-time $20 rescue fee, plus 18% VAT on all charges. Total park fees for a seven-day climb come to roughly $900 to $1,000 per person before operator margins. An eight-day climb adds another $120 to $150 in fees. The fees are paid through licensed operators, not directly to TANAPA.
Total cost to climb Kilimanjaro through a licensed operator, including park fees, guides, porters, food, and accommodation, typically ranges from $1,800 to $3,500 per person depending on route, duration, operator quality, and season. Budget operators at the low end of this range often compromise on guide experience, food quality, or porter welfare, all of which affect your climb.
Choosing an Operator
Tanzania law requires all Kilimanjaro climbers to use a licensed operator with registered guides and porters. This is not optional or avoidable.
The quality difference between operators is substantial. Questions worth asking: What is your guide-to-client ratio on summit night? Do your guides carry supplemental oxygen and a pulse oximeter? What is your policy on porter wages and weight limits? How many summit attempts have your guides led? A responsible operator should answer these questions comfortably. One who deflects or gives vague answers is a reasonable warning sign.

What Altitude Sickness Actually Means
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the primary reason climbers do not reach the summit. The symptoms, headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, are caused by insufficient oxygen at altitude and the body’s failure to compensate quickly enough. Above approximately 3,500 metres, AMS becomes a risk. Above 4,500 metres, it affects most unacclimatized people to some degree.
The only reliable treatment for moderate to severe AMS is descent. Continuing to climb with worsening AMS risks High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), both of which can be fatal.
Diamox (acetazolamide) reduces AMS symptoms and is widely used. It requires a prescription and carries side effects (tingling in the hands and feet, increased urination, rare allergic reactions). Consult a travel medicine doctor before your climb.
Summit night on most routes begins around midnight or 01:00, ascending through temperatures that can reach -20 degrees Celsius with wind chill. Many climbers who reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5,739 metres) cannot continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres), 156 metres higher and roughly 45 minutes further in normal conditions. That final stretch, when oxygen is lowest and fatigue is highest, is where a significant proportion of turnarounds happen.
Five Vegetation Zones
The climb from the park gate to the summit passes through five distinct ecological zones, each compressed into a vertical band that would span thousands of kilometres of latitude at sea level.
Cultivation zone (800 to 1,800 metres): Coffee, banana, and maize farms on the lower slopes, managed by the Chagga people who have farmed the mountain’s fertile volcanic soils for centuries.
Rainforest (1,800 to 3,000 metres): Dense montane forest receiving significant moisture from clouds. African elephants, buffalo, colobus monkeys, and over 150 bird species live here, including Abbott’s starling, which is found almost nowhere else. The trail is usually wet and muddy in this section.
Heath and moorland (3,000 to 4,000 metres): Open grassland with heather reaching tree height. Giant lobelias and Senecio groundsels grow here, both species having evolved extraordinary adaptations to freezing nights, including leaves that fold inward to protect the growing tip and stems filled with water-storing pith. These plants do not exist at lower elevations and look unlike anything in a temperate landscape.
Alpine desert (4,000 to 5,000 metres): Almost no vegetation. Rocky terrain with temperature swings of 40 degrees Celsius or more between day and night. The Lava Tower (4,630 metres), passed on Machame and Lemosho routes, sits in this zone and is used as an acclimatization point.
Arctic summit zone (above 5,000 metres): Permanent snow, ice, and rock. The glaciers. No vegetation.
When to Climb
Two main dry seasons offer the best summit conditions: January through mid-March, and mid-June through October. January and February have the advantage of fewer climbers than the July-August peak. October is good and uncrowded.
April, May, and November are the long and short rainy seasons respectively. Climbing is possible but conditions in the rainforest section become significantly more challenging, visibility at the summit is often poor, and some operators reduce operations. Success rates dip.
The mountain receives climbers year-round, but the January-February and July-September periods account for the majority of ascents.
Moshi and Getting There
The closest town is Moshi, about 30 kilometres from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and most route starting gates. Arusha, the larger regional city and the hub of the Tanzania safari industry, is about 75 kilometres west. Kilimanjaro International Airport has direct connections to Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Addis Ababa, Amsterdam, and Dubai.
Most climbers spend at least one night in Moshi or Arusha before and after the climb. Both towns have accommodation ranging from budget guesthouses to mid-range hotels, with good access to final gear purchases, money exchange, and pre-climb logistics.
The Kilimanjaro area, particularly the lower slopes and the nearby Amboseli National Park across the Kenyan border, offers good wildlife viewing without climbing, including elephant and big cat sightings with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop. Amboseli is frequently combined with a Kilimanjaro climb for a two-week Tanzania-Kenya trip.
One Preparation Detail Most Guides Skip
The standard advice is to arrive at least a day before the climb starts. What is less frequently mentioned is that the first campsite on most routes (around 2,700 to 3,000 metres) is already high enough to produce mild AMS in someone who flew in at sea level two days earlier. Spending a night in Moshi (800 metres) does essentially nothing for acclimatization. If your first day of climbing starts at a gate at 1,800 metres and ascends to 2,900 metres, your body is adapting from sea-level conditions to 2,900 metres in roughly 24 hours.
For climbers coming from very low altitudes, spending a night or two at moderate altitude before the climb begins, at a mountain lodge, or hiking in the foothills, gives the body a more graduated transition. Operators rarely suggest this because it adds days before the booked climb starts. It is worth considering regardless.
Book all arrangements at least three months ahead for January-February or July-August climbs, and six weeks ahead for most other periods.
