Once a year, on the Sunday closest to July 2nd, a 100-year-old machine spins up in a Swedish forest and sends Morse code across the Atlantic on a frequency you can still receive on ordinary radio equipment in most of Europe. That machine is the reason Grimeton exists as a UNESCO site at all, and it is not a spark gap transmitter, despite what a lot of secondhand write-ups claim. It’s an Alexanderson alternator, a genuinely different and more advanced technology, and the last fully working example of its kind anywhere on earth.
What actually makes this place special
Built in 1922-1924 by the Swedish telegraph administration for transatlantic communication with the United States, Grimeton used a rotating electromechanical generator, invented by Swedish-American engineer Ernst Alexanderson, to produce continuous radio waves at a fixed low frequency rather than the short bursts spark gap transmitters relied on. Continuous waves could carry information more efficiently over huge distances, which made Grimeton and its sister stations cutting edge for their moment, a technology bridge between the earliest wireless experiments and the vacuum-tube and solid-state electronics that replaced it within a couple of decades. UNESCO listed the site in 2004 specifically because it survives as the sole complete example of this pre-electronic transmission technology, including the original antenna system strung across six 127-meter steel towers still standing today.
The station kept working commercially long after its technology was obsolete elsewhere, later used for time-signal and other transmission services into the early 1990s, and it never went fully silent: it’s maintained today by volunteers and enthusiasts, callsign SAQ, who fire up the alternator for a handful of ceremonial transmissions each year, most notably Alexanderson Day near July 2nd and again on Christmas Eve.
Visiting
The site runs on a seasonal schedule: roughly mid-February through mid-June and again mid-August through October it’s open Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 3pm, while the high season from late June through mid-August extends to daily 9am to 5pm. Even outside staffed hours, the exhibition and the historic Transmitter Hall can often be visited via self-check-in, so a visit outside the main season isn’t automatically a wasted trip. Adult admission runs around 160 SEK, with a slightly higher tier that adds a guided “Day Shift” tour for about 170 SEK, and reduced rates for children 6 to 18. If your dates can be arranged around Alexanderson Day itself, do it: hearing that alternator actually run, rather than looking at it static in a glass hall, is the entire reason to make this detour.
Getting there
By car, exit the E6 motorway at junction 53 from the south or 54 from the north and follow the signposted route to Grimeton Radio Station; free parking sits about 20 meters from the visitor center. Without a car, take bus 661 or the local Åkturen service from Varberg to the Grimeton Radiostation stop. Varberg itself is roughly an hour’s drive or about a 45-minute train ride south of Gothenburg, making this an easy half-day add-on if you’re already working the west coast of Sweden rather than a destination requiring its own dedicated trip.
Pairing it with Varberg
Skip the fabricated tourist-list attractions you’ll sometimes see attached to Varberg online (there’s no medieval tower called Kärnan here; that one belongs to Helsingborg, further south). What Varberg actually has is Varbergs Fästning, a genuine coastal fortress dating to the late 13th century, home to the Halland Museum of Cultural History and the well-preserved Bocksten Man, a medieval bog body discovered locally. Right beside the fortress sits Kallbadhuset, a historic open-air bathhouse where you can swim in the Kattegat off a jetty and diving tower, a properly cold plunge that pairs oddly well with an afternoon spent among century-old radio towers. Bring a jacket regardless of season; the antenna field sits exposed on open ground and the coastal wind off the Kattegat cuts through most of the year.
